The Review

This was a powerful and gripping dark fantasy novella. The narrative does a marvelous job of using powerful imagery in the author’s writing style to create an immersive experience that gives readers a sense of big, climactic battles and haunting horrors that lie just beneath the surface. The amount of world-building the author brought to life in such a short read was incredible, and the visceral nature of the big fight scenes added adrenaline-fueled action that readers could visualize cinematically.

The depth of character development and mythology was at the heart of this narrative. The complexity of Raurkein as a protagonist and his connection to Fiona added an emotional depth to the narrative to make the characters feel invested in the story, while the shocking revelations behind the immortal Monarch’s identity will have readers on the edge of their seats as their history hints at an even bigger threat that no one could have seen coming.

The Verdict

A strong, compelling, and engaging dark fantasy novella, author Paul G. Zareith’s “The Moribund Monarch’s Masterpiece” is a must-read story. The twists and turns the story takes, the wonderful blend of action and adventure with a dark fantasy atmosphere, and the twisted, haunting imagery that brings the shocking revelations to life on the page will stay with readers long after the story ends.
