When life feels uncertain, people turn to what resonates most for guidance and escape. For many people, that includes music, whether it is a particular song or artist in general. Music can provide a fun escape for some people, but songs’ lyrics or musical DNA can also offer a pathway to understanding a life lesson that has either alluded them or been difficult to grasp during a truly difficult moment.

In artist Kenny Foster’s “Sideways Apocalypse,” the artist explores how unpredictable and uncertain life can be, but through a hopeful lens, life can find a way to be OK. The new single balances an almost 60s-through-80s Americana and folk-rock sound with an alt-rock twist. The soothing guitar riffs and soft yet melodic vocals blend in a way that feels like The Beach Boys meets Gotye.

The powerful lyrics leave a lasting impression on the audience. More than a summer anthem, it’s a life anthem, taking time to hit heartfelt moments of genuine honesty and hope while also delivering powerful imagery, such as in the lyric “I saw the FBI dress like the CIA.” While music in general can be interpreted, depending on the audience, this lyric to me felt like a teaching moment to show that people can often misrepresent themselves or appear to be something they are not, but as later lyrics reveal, we can still hope for the best in humanity and wish people well even if they are fooling themselves.
