While vocals can play a pivotal role in truly great music, music itself is not limited to vocal performances. Some of history’s greatest music is instrumental, from the works of great composers like Beethoven and Mozart to modern-day film scores by John Williams and Danny Elfman. Yet not all instrumentals are in these classical or theater-level tones either; modern film scores increasingly use mainstream rock and electronic styles to tell their stories.

This is the sound and tone that artist Mr. MilK tells in their latest track, titled “Failure to Comply.” Rather than telling a story through powerful lyrics, the artist does a fantastic job of instilling a sense of story and urgency through a musical style that conveys both the emotional tone and the relevance the story is meant to explore.

The single does a fantastic job of immediately grabbing audiences’ attention by bringing to life a solid electronic base and intense drum work to sell that sense of urgency. The visceral electric guitar work conveys that rock sound that is reminiscent of artists such as Prism and Nine Inch Nails, while the electronic tones that are interspersed with these in instrumentals convey an almost thriller-like atmosphere that immediately sparks the audience’s imagination, as if they are watching a high-octane, crime thriller being played out on the screen inside their minds.
