THE REVIEW

This was a wonderful balance of dark comedy, dystopian, sci-fi, and horror storytelling. The author does an incredible job building on the events of the first book by not only investing in the returning characters, but also expanding the specific area of Los Angeles where the story takes place and the survivors of this neighborhood who learned to fight this growing threat. The description of this fungal network, in particular, and its influence on both the living and the dead was very well written, allowing readers to feel fully immersed in each scene and visualize it playing out cinematically in their minds.

The author did a great job bringing humor into this very dark novel, but what really stood out was how the Author added depth to the characters through the emotional consequences they faced in the aftermath of the first book’s ending. The psychological and emotional distress protagonist Pippi feels, not only having survived the first book, but still having the lingering effects of this killer in her mind, is the foundation from which this novel’s narrative springs, and the rich mythology that allows this demented killer to live even in death keeps the twisted horror elements at work to engage the reader fully.

THE VERDICT

Thrilling, haunting, and entertaining, Author Terrell Chafin’s “Reawakening: Mother’s Little Helpers Book Two” is a must-read dark comedy-meets-horror novel. The shocking twists and turns that build on the first book, the epic finale, and the rich character development that expands this visceral, compelling horror mythos will resonate with readers and fans of the genre, leaving them eager for more of this author’s work. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Terrell Chafin lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Charlie, and the ghosts of their two dogs, Willie and Bear, who still stomp around on the bed at night.

A former composer, he somehow ended up spending more than 30 years in the legal technology field. After retiring, he decided to focus on his passions for fiction writing and performing magic—and occasionally both. After a decade of tinkering with his first novel, the award-winning Awakening, he followed it with the sequel, ReAwakening.
