A small town is ravaged by bloodthirsty creatures in author J.D. Raymond’s “The Brood Below.”
The Synopsis
New Friendship is a quiet town nestled deep in the woods of Western
Massachusetts. Not much happens there, and that’s just the way
residents like it.
All of that changes when high school couple Lisa and Angie discover
that vampires have taken quiet refuge in their town and have now
awakened to feed.
THE REVIEW
This was a gripping and fantastic supernatural horror story. The author wrote with a reverence and kinship to the horror genre that readers and fans of this story will feel on every page. The imagery and atmosphere the author delivers in every chapter create an immersive experience that harkens back to the stories fans of vampires in particular grew up on: Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and so much more.
The character development and world-building were top-notch. While the supernatural threat of these particular vampires felt fresh and chilling, offering enemies that felt both prehistoric yet cunning at the same time, the author was also able to tap into the modern-day social standings of young teens in the age of social media and divided politics, with a setting that felt relevant and engaging at the same time. Infused with humor and wit, these characters jumped off the page and kept readers invested with every turn.
THE VERDICT
Haunting, thrilling, and entertaining, Author J.D. Raymond’s “The Brood Below” is a fantastic entry in a new vampire horror series that readers will love. The story’s twists and turns, along with the visuals the author brings to life, offer a terrifying, enthralling journey that captures the tone of late 70s through mid-90s vampire horror and supernatural thrillers alike.
