THE REVIEW
This powerful, rich collection of sci-fi short stories is a must-read. The author balances grandiose, otherworldly storytelling with down-to-earth, gritty narratives that speak to the human condition. The stories range from introspective dramas to humorous adventures and everything in between, leaving readers plenty to sink their teeth into, no matter their preferences.
The author’s imagery comes to life on the page, and each story feels imaginative and creative enough to become part of a Netflix- or Hulu-inspired anthology series. The writing’s cinematic quality immerses readers in these fantastic worlds and connects them to these characters’ emotional journey in such a short time. One personal favorite of mine in this collection was Subhero, which explored the emotional trauma of those left behind when someone takes on the role of a hero in the world.
THE VERDICT
Compelling, adventurous, and entertaining, author Allison McBain’s “Diving into Nebulae” is a must-read sci-fi anthology. The range of storytelling found within the science genre throughout this collection is amazing, and the way the author is able to tell a fully realized and emotionally driven story in such a short amount of time, whether the story is one page or a couple dozen pages, will allow readers to connect to the author’s writing style immediately and keep them invested in this collection.
