THE SYNOPSIS

Ignorance always wins. Might as well run with it!

Charlie Witt wasted his life suffocating in the shadow of his older brother, the only person immune to Michael’s secret—an unconscious, weaponized aura of profound stupidity known as the dim. Anyone who wandered too close to Michael instantly lost their train of thought, forgot basic facts, and made catastrophic life choices even worse than mullet extensions.

When Charlie’s lingering bitterness accidentally kicks Michael’s dormant power into overdrive, the resulting wave of global stupidity triggers an unprecedented geopolitical meltdown.

Within days, a rogue NASCAR champion turned US President annexes a grimy Canadian smelter town to Make America First Again, a flamboyant British King wearing a lucky green bunnyhug launches an absurd sovereign defence, and world leaders everywhere begin deep-frying cell phones and declaring war on overcast skies.

Merging the sharp cosmic absurdity of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with the grim, cynical satire of Catch-22, The Big Stupid delivers a razor-sharp autopsy of human vanity, political farce, and institutional decay.

THE REVIEW

This rich, compelling satire blends family and political drama with a hint of supernatural, metaphysical storytelling. The author perfectly mirrors events and the world’s emotional state today, with political division, especially in the United States and parts of Canada, never higher. The author’s detailed chapters immerse readers in the characters’ lives and make them emotionally invested in their journey.

The balance of humorous, witty dialogue with the dynamic storytelling and world-building makes this novel truly stand out. The opening chapter highlights the haunting reality of life in an America where personal freedoms have never been in shorter supply. The complicated dynamics between the protagonist and his brother, plus international politics that clash with small-town life and the desperation to fight back against the rise of tyranny, ground this fantastical story in the right moments and keep readers on the edge of their seats throughout much of the novel.

THE VERDICT

Compelling, thought-provoking, and engaging, author David Hamilton’s “DimWitts: The Big Stupid” is a must-read: political satire meets family and small-town drama with a hefty dose of humor. The story’s twists and turns, along with its haunting mirror of real-world issues, keep readers hooked. It keeps readers deeply invested in the characters and their journey, and they’ll be eager to read more from this insightful author. If you haven’t yet, please be sure to grab your copy today!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A writer’s resume must include a certain taste of whimsy, grit, and misdirection.

David J. wanders the Great White North collecting tales of (mis)adventure, sadness, and manic frivolity rooted in an endless curiosity. Educated by the sternest grammarians and literary luminaries of the Saskatoon Public School system, Hamilton learned to combine his punchy prose, irreverent humour, and satirical eye under decades of intense pressure as a Red Seal Chef.

And so shines the crazy diamond.

These days, he plies his respective trades in the Southern Kootenays, where inspiration is everywhere and the calamity of wonder never ceases to amaze. Or stupefy.
