THE REVIEW

This inspiring, engaging children’s book is a must-read. The author does a fantastic job of balancing the motivational aspects of this book for young readers, especially young girls who have a passion for hockey and want to know that they can put their passion to work when they get older, with the bright and comforting illustration work that made the story come to life on the page. The book’s fast pacing and heartfelt design immediately grab the reader’s attention as it moves forward.

Seeing the story come to life on the page was truly marvelous, as it not only brought women’s hockey to life in vivid detail, but also highlighted that young women have just as much right and talent to compete in professional sports as men do. Pairing this heartfelt story, which children can identify with, with the history of the women’s hockey league and how it has grown since its inception gives it a grounded reality that lets young readers see for themselves that their dreams are possible.

THE VERDICT

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Chrissy Hobbs, also known by her pen name Sam Lawrence, is a Canadian author, publisher, and entrepreneur. Since 2015, she has been writing and publishing books that educate, inspire, and entertain young readers. As the owner of Indie Publishing Group Inc., Chrissy has helped countless authors bring their publishing dreams to life while continuing to grow her own catalogue of children’s books.

Drawing on her experience as a former police dispatcher and her ongoing studies in emergency management, Chrissy developed a passion for helping families better understand and prepare for challenging situations. Through her research and education, she recognized a gap in children’s literature: books that explain natural disasters in a way that is both informative and emotionally supportive.

Her Navigating Natural Disasters series was created to help children understand what happens during disasters, how to prepare, and how to cope with the emotions that often follow. Through stories of resilience, preparedness, and community support, Chrissy hopes to give young readers the confidence and knowledge they need to face difficult situations with courage.

In addition to the Navigating Natural Disasters series, Chrissy is the author of the Softball Strikeout series and When Girls Took the Ice, which celebrates the pioneers who helped shape women’s hockey in Canada.

When she isn’t writing, publishing, or studying emergency management, Chrissy enjoys spending time with her family and continuing her mission to create books that educate, empower, and inspire the next generation.
