I am honored to be able to present this month’s recap of acclaimed author D.C. GOMEZ’S “The Intern Diaries” series. The series follows a young waitress/musician who finds herself thrust into the world of the supernatural when she is tasked with becoming the untrained intern of none other than Death itself. Discovering the Horsemen are real and rogue witches, vampires, magical talking cats and more all fall under the purview of the Horsemen leaves this young woman thrust into a humorous urban fantasy and supernatural story that is both quirky and fun. Below you will find a complete recap of the entire series, including a synopsis, my review, and the link to the book for you to check out and enjoy for yourself. I hope you all will enjoy this trip into the supernatural as much as I did.
DEATH’S INTERN (BOOK ONE):
THE SYNOPSIS
A talking cat, a boy genius, missing people, and an untrained Intern for Death. What could possibly go wrong?
Did that really happen?
There’s no way Death offered me a job. I’m a musician that makes her living as a waitress, with absolutely no training in the supernatural world. This is all a very bad dream.
But Bob has been kidnapped, and I can’t possibly lose the only friend I have.
Bob, you’d better be alive. Because if I just gave my soul to Death for nothing, I will personally kill you. Not to mention, it seems Death’s Interns have fairly short life expectancies.
God, don’t let me die.

THE REVIEW
This was such a fun and exhilarating urban fantasy read! The author did a fantastic job of capturing the balance of action-packed drama and humorous wit that the character exuded. The action picks up immediately, setting the stage for a powerful narrative that explores the concept of death and the ways in which humanity tries to control our destinies. The rich mythology and world-building the author developed played out on the page in a very cinematic way, the writing kind of reflecting imagery that would bring any modern streaming series to life.
Yet it was the diverse and captivating character development that really caught my eye. The intense action was equally elevated and balanced with the humor and charm of the main cast of characters. While the protagonist was a truly well-rounded and strong new hero in an urban fantasy setting, it was the strong supporting cast that was really amazing to read. From Death herself to a talking cat named Constantine and a young tech whiz named Bartholomew, the author created characters that offered humor, wit, and emotional depth to keep us invested in the narrative.
PLAGUE UNLEASHED (BOOK TWO):
THE SYNOPSIS
A disgruntled employee, sibling rivalry, and zombie attacks. Who said Texarkana was boring?
I swear, I didn’t do it.
It wasn’t me.
I did not start the zombie-apocalypse in Texarkana.
But I’m planning to find out who did it, before the whole city is taken over by those mindless souls.
Too bad the one person that might have the answer is the one being Constantine despises above all else, Death’s Sister, Pestilence. How can one person be so absolutely despicable? Why does she need ten interns all calling her Mistress? She is evil.
Pestilence swears she didn’t cause the Plague. I’m blaming her anyway. Now all I need is more time and less five-year-olds trying to eat their teachers’ faces. Scratch that, what I really need is a new job.
* Plague Unleashed is book two in the action-packed and humorous Urban Fantasy series The Intern Diaries. Isis Black has survived eight months as Death’s Intern. But not even all her training could prepared her for the madness of zombies running loose in Texarkana. How do you stop a group of brainless semi-zombies that you can’t kill? THE REVIEW
This novel’s unique blend of humor and supernatural mythos was on point. The author did an incredible job of world-building in this narrative, with the small town of Texarkana not only bringing a more intimate setting to the larger-than-life narrative but also becoming quite vast in nature when the grand scale of this storyline comes to fruition.
Yet for me personally, it was the combination of rich character dynamics and deep-rooted mythos that the author crafted that made this story so brilliant. The inclusion of other powerful entities besides Death being expanded upon in this narrative and the inclusion and teases of other supernatural creatures and mythologies made the cohesive nature of the story feel pretty epic. All the while, the author brought some heart and humor to the situation with the cast of characters, for whom they found love and friendship amongst one another that kept them together and fueled their mission to help those affected by these supernatural threats.
FORBIDDEN WAR (BOOK THREE):
THE SYNOPSIS
A trip to hell. Angry Vampires. Seductive Elves. Oh my!
Do I honestly look like a mediator?
Let’s be honest. I can barely keep the peace between the boys, and they like each other.
Why would Death agree to send us to supervise a peace negotiation between vampires and elves, just because her egotistical brother, War, doesn’t want to do it?
We don’t even like vampires. If Constantine is correct, we barely tolerate each other due to our own messy peace negotiations. To make my life even more complicated, even my Godmother has a secret.
This is a huge catastrophe waiting to explode. Three days to find a princess or Texarkana becomes the site for WWIII. I really need a raise.
* Forbidden War is book three in the Urban Fantasy series The Intern Diaries. The stakes are higher for Isis Black as she meets another of Death’s siblings. The manipulative War is at it again, and dumping one giant mess on Isis and her friends.

THE REVIEW
This is another fantastic entry into this phenomenal urban fantasy series. The author does an incredible job of further exploring the paranormal mythos of the characters’ world. The thing that always brings a bright spot to the story itself is the exploration of the Horsemen mythos, the relationship and differences between Death and her siblings, and how it impacts the paranormal world.
The blend of humor in the characters’ dialogue and character development made this story shine. The witty banter between Isis and the other characters felt like the same charming humor found in shows like Supernatural back in the day. Exploring the relationship vampires have with other members of the paranormal community was mesmerizing to see come to life on the page.
UNSTOPPABLE FAMINE (BOOK FOUR):
THE SYNOPSIS
Animal attacks, a temperamental Horseman, and a cranky Intern. Heads are going to roll.
Why does everyone keep telling me I need a vacation?
I’m not volatile.
But how would you handle running your own city, with domestic disputes, vandalism, and even breaking and entering? Oh yeah, add in all the citizens are supernatural?
There is only so much a girl can handle.
Now I have unexplained animal attacks and the moody Famine to deal with. I don’t need a vacation. Just don’t cross me and life will be great for everyone. Because you don’t want to see me mad.
* Unstoppable Famine is book four in The Intern Diaries, The Urban Fantasy Series based on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Isis Black never expected to become an overworked, stress-out intern, ready to snap. With the demands of running a city and dealing with the deception surrounding the Horsemen, even Isis has her breaking point. But will Texarkana survive Isis and Famine?
THE REVIEW
One thing I’ve always loved about this series is the wonderful blend of humor and wit the author brings to the character dynamics. The book can explore everything from the pros and cons of eating meat and going to war online with Satan over a viral video to moments of explosive action and intensity that instantly grab readers’ attention. The larger-than-life world-building is always really well balanced with little life moments that make the reader feel grounded and engaged in the world the author has created.
The heart of this narrative has to be in the character growth and the larger themes the story plays on. Seeing the protagonist struggling with balance and burnout (even in a supernatural sense) allowed the reader to glimpse a relatable tone that highlighted the struggles many people face in finding moments for themselves amid responsibilities and sacrifices. The protagonist’s deepening bond with characters like Bartholomew and the unique story that unfolds when they bring Famine into the mix will keep readers invested as the story progresses.
JUDGEMENT DAY (BOOK FIVE):
THE SYNOPSIS
Kidnapping, attacks, and the Horsemen want pay-back. Beware world…people will die.
What would you do for your family?
For Bartholomew, I would give up my soul.
If they harm him, I will doom the world.
We are in the middle of war. We have been betrayed. The enemy is coming at us from everywhere, and our fearless leaders’ solution is to start the apocalypse and destroy humanity. Too bad that would probably kill Bart as well.
Why is it up to me to come up with a solution to this mess? I’m not even the oldest of Death’s Interns. Bartholomew, hang in there, we are coming!
* Judgement Day is the final book in the Intern Dairies Series. This action-packed urban fantasy series will take you on a journey that will leave you holding onto your seats. Life and death decisions should never be made when you are mad at the world. Somebody should tell the Horsemen that.
THE REVIEW
This is the most visceral and gripping narrative of the Intern Diaries series to date. The world building and mythos are well developed as always in this book, and the balance of action and fun and quirky dialogue kept the reader invested as the story progressed.
The characters and their connection to one another remains the heart of this series. The protagonist’s evolution as a character has been the most prominent, seeing her come into this leadership role and her unique relationship with Death itself as those boundaries between intern and boss are pushed to the limits was something to read, and the lengths she was willing to go to in order to save the life of Bartholomew was the emotional crux of this narrative. The depths of the supernatural world and the wider impact on the small town they call home was grown and evolved to all new heights this time around, and kept the reader on the edge of their seats.
CURSED BY FUR (BOOK SIX):
THE SYNOPSIS

THE REVIEW
Immediately what strikes me in this book is how the author was able to immerse the reader into the world of the Reapers Universe without isolating newcomers to the series. While also part of the Once Upon a Curse book series, the story is set within the Reapers Universe, and the author was able to infuse the outrageous and fun humor that the series was known for and the creative world-building that allows heroes like Isis (Death’s Intern) and a talking cat like Constantine to all coexist naturally in this gripping narrative.
The unique twist on the Red Riding Hood narrative was so fun to read and see come to life on the page. The mystery behind this woman’s actions and the targeting of werewolves and shifters was a powerful drive for readers to delve further and further into this story, and the revelation of the motivation later in the story adds a unique twist that adds depth to the foundation of this story. The spicy and heated adult storytelling with the serial killer twist on a typically supernatural driven series was the perfect addition to a Halloween themed setting and timeline that gives a slasher vibe that is impossible to ignore, and makes this a must-read addition to the Intern Diaries series.
FINAL IMPRESSION
A whirlwind adventure into the dark and wild underworld of the supernatural, this urban fantasy series does an incredible job of bringing the paranormal and mythological creatures and figures that people have come to know and love and blending them into the Texakarana scene in a way that is both fun and exhilirating. The unique characters, the escalating threats the Death’s Intern team faces, and the bonds that form between the characters all create an action-packed, suspense filled thrill ride that gives hits of romance and heart that will keep readers wanting more from this powerful series.
