THE REVIEW

This was another compelling and gripping historical fiction drama. The author does an incredible job of building on this family’s legacy, which the series follows well, and also explores the complexities and horrors of the slave trade that emerged in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Exploring the final years of established characters in the first two books, while also introducing new members of the family and showcasing how large the family empire has grown in the years since Carlo a.k.a. Charles first began his journey across the Atlantic, gave readers a chance to feel fully immersed in this historical era and feel the weight of the choices Carlo made all those years ago.

The heart of this narrative, of course, is the exploration of such a dark period of history. The changing perspectives in each chapter allowed readers to get a glimpse of several different characters from each angle of this era of time, and took the time to thoughtfully and carefully showcase the brutality and heartbreaking reality of those involved in the slave trade, named thus because much of this conflict came about as a result of years of resource trading and business that escalated into the human rights violations and horrors that would eventually become slavery.

THE VERDICT

A detailed, immersive, and highly engaging read, Author Armand Du Silence’s “The Breath of Africa” is a must-read historical fiction drama. The way the author is able to delve into historical moments and locations, including aspects of history like the Ashanti Empire, and the warring nations that fueled the slave trade to begin with, and the balance that the author found by pairing this with a story of divided family, and the cost to human life that slavery has as a whole made this an important and thoughtful novel that readers will not want to put down. Armand Du Silence is an Italian-born author and a traveller by vocation, standing as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary adventure fiction. His literary work is profoundly influenced by personal explorations, allowing him to imbue his books with a realism and depth rarely found in the genre.
