THE REVIEW

This compelling, gripping dystopian YA sci-fi novel is a great sequel to the first book in the series. The writing vividly details and brings to life a cinematic experience in the reader’s mind, creating an immersive journey that highlights the struggles and visceral nature of what this cast faces. The story’s dangerous, bleak atmosphere lingers on every page, and the mounting tension stays with readers as the narrative progresses.

The balance between action-packed drama and emotional character development makes this a powerful sequel. The world-building highlights the devastation this illness has caused, physically and socially, and the power struggles that ensue, all built on a foundation of secrets and lies as a protagonist struggles against a power-mad relative who will stop at nothing to prevent them from healing the world. The theme of absolute power corrupting absolutely, along with the emotional depth of the relationships, is strong. These characters, shaped by one another, highlight their struggle for survival and their desire to help others.

THE VERDICT

Compelling, thrilling, and entertaining, Author Tricia Copeland’s “Torch” is a must-read dystopian sci-fi young adult novel.
