THE SYNOPSIS

AN ANCIENT WARNING CARVED IN STONE. A DEADLY SOLAR STORM. HUMANITY’S LAST DEFENSE. SURVIVAL SOLD TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER.

The Sun gave us life. Now humanity must survive its fury.

From the award-winning author of “Born in Space,” a gripping hard sci-fi action thriller that combines cutting-edge science, unforgettable characters, and a heart-stopping race to save humanity. Part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone book.

A 3,000-year-old Olmec mosaic points to an imminent solar catastrophe capable of crippling satellites, collapsing global communications, and plunging civilization into darkness.

Humanity’s only hope is Kavach, an immense orbital shield built from resources on the Moon. But when its construction falls under the control of trillionaire industrialist Howie Rich, survival becomes a commodity—and Earth’s future is sold to the highest bidder.

Determined to escape his father’s malignant shadow, Arturo Rich takes charge of the project, only to discover that saving the world may require him to defy the man who built it. He finds an unexpected ally in Airi Abe, a fearless test pilot whose survival after a devastating lunar crash changes the course of his life.

But as the countdown to imminent apocalypse accelerates, mysterious system failures, political rivalries, and corporate greed threaten to destroy the project from within. With time running out, Arturo and Airi must decide what they are willing to sacrifice—not only for each other, but for every life on Earth.

A gripping blend of scientifically grounded speculation, high-stakes suspense, and unforgettable characters that asks a timeless question: who should control the technology that can save humanity? Space Shield explores what happens when the planet’s greatest threat comes not from another world—but from the star that gives us life.

THE REVIEW

This is a gripping, tense blend of dystopian, sci-fi, and thriller storytelling. The author’s detailed science-based descriptions immerse the reader in the world. The author crafts it so readers feel as if they are living in this futuristic yet uncertain time. The world-building and mythos surrounding the technology and the speculative nature of the narrative itself create an intense atmosphere that allows these characters to grow and thrive in.

For many, the hope is that, in the face of untold, cataclysmic disaster, humanity can find unity and purpose by surviving together. The harsh reality is that this is far from the truth, and the author captures it perfectly by exploring what happens when greedy corporations become the first line of defense against extinction. The complex family dynamic between the protagonist and the man who developed this world-saving project, along with a deeper look at mankind’s resources, politics, corruption, and class systems, keeps readers invested as the story progresses.

THE VERDICT

Compelling, engaging, and visceral, Author Jeremy Clift’s “Space Shield” is a must-read dystopian sci-fi/speculative thriller. The twists and turns, the detailed science, and the powerful thematic storytelling fully immerse readers in this dynamic world and keep them on the edge of their seats until the final chapter. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jeremy Clift is a science fiction author and former international journalist whose novels explore how humanity’s expansion into space could transform what it means to be human.

His Sci-Fi Galaxy series follows humanity beyond Earth through genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, lunar industry, corporate ambition, and the growing struggle over who controls the technologies shaping our future.

Born in Space: Unlocking Destiny asks what happens when humans begin creating children for life beyond Earth. Space Vault: The Seed Eclipse moves the story to the Moon, where control of genetic resources raises a more fundamental question: Who owns life? In Space Shield: The Wrath of the Sun, the stakes become planetary as humanity races to build a defense against a catastrophic solar storm.

Together, the novels trace an expanding set of questions: Who creates life? Who owns life? Who protects life?

A reader of Adrian Tchaikovsky, Cixin Liu, Andy Weir, and Martha Wells, Clift is particularly interested in how space exploration, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies could reshape human society over the next two centuries. His fiction combines scientifically grounded speculation with questions about family, identity, power and humanity’s future beyond Earth.

Before turning to fiction, Clift worked as an international news correspondent for Reuters and in magazines and institutional publishing, becoming a nonfiction publisher, communications consultant, and writing coach. A graduate of the London School of Economics and George Washington University, he has lived and worked in cities around the world, including Beijing, Bombay, Cairo, New Delhi, Jakarta, London, Manila, Paris and Washington, D.C.

His nonfiction work has included interviews and profiles of leading economists and policymakers, including Nobel laureates Daniel Kahneman and Vernon Smith, and he has edited books and collections on economics, globalization, development, and public policy.
