I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.  All opinions are my own.

Author Robert Dutch shares a powerful collection of horror stories encountering memory, grief, and what happens when people encounter the unexplained in the book “THE ROOM ISN’T EMPTY ANYMORE.”

THE SYNOPSIS

Some rooms are empty. Some only look that way.

The Room Isn’t Empty Anymore: Book One is a collection of seventeen stories about ordinary lives encountering something they cannot explain, escape, or undo.

A mysterious book demands a true confession. A mountain begins copying a solitary hiker. A grocery-store receipt prints something no receipt should know.

Across seventeen stories, memory shifts, grief takes shape, love becomes dangerous, and the familiar develops cracks through which something impossible can enter.

Moving between psychological horror, supernatural dread, dark speculative fiction, and deeply human tragedy, The Room Isn’t Empty Anymore isn’t interested only in what waits in the darkness. It is interested in what people carry with them after they have seen it.

Seventeen stories. Seventeen different doors. Not all of them should be opened.

THE REVIEW

This was a compelling and gripping collection of short horror stories. The world-building and character development were exceptional. What the author achieved in each story was astonishing, and it led readers to truly connect with the emotional weight of each story and the arcs these characters went through. One thing that the author does well here that I think other writers such as Stephen King and Mike Flanagan have mastered in their own works is both creating a powerful atmosphere that is totally immersive and allows people to become lost in the worlds they create, and approaching horror from a very human perspective, allowing readers to connect to the emotional tone and themes that the story embodies, and having the horror aspects reflect these very real human struggles.

The variety of different stories and what they each embody thematically, from grief and fear of the unknown to morality and memories, made this story collection so moving. One story that stood out to me, especially as it pertains to the recent Halloween holiday, was the Unbooked Room. The story explored a haunted attraction and a mysterious room, not included in the original designs, that appeared and disappeared at will. The emotional connection readers felt with the protagonist, along with the visceral imagery as the story progressed and revealed some of the hidden horrors she had to face, made this story truly stand out.

THE VERDICT

Compelling, engaging, and haunting, Robert Dutch’s “The Room Isn’t Empty Anymore” is a must-read horror-driven short story collection. The twists and turns each story takes, along with its compelling themes and characters, make it a must-read. The author weaves a chilling, emotionally driven collection that readers will not be able to put down. If you haven’t yet, please be sure to grab your copy today!
