The Synopsis

The town knows the rules of the lottery. Dylan doesn’t even know there’s a game.

Dylan didn’t expect a call about the birth father he’d never known. When the man dies in a forgotten Florida town, he heads to Hargrove to settle the affairs of a ghost from his past.

The place looks ordinary from the highway, but nothing feels right once he arrives. Locals stare too long. Strangers know his name. The town motto, Florida’s Fortune Earned, hangs over everything like a warning.

As Dylan digs into the life he was never meant to know, he finds a community built on secrets, debts, and a loyalty that turns dangerous fast. Hargrove didn’t just forget his father. It’s been waiting for him.

Some inheritances offer a future. Others pull you under. In Hargrove, every fortune has a cost.

The Review

This was such a compelling and engaging suspense novel. The author takes the time to make the reader care about these characters, with a strong, conflicted protagonist who is relatable and easy to connect with. The cast of supporting characters both bring this small town to life and keep a rotating list of characters that become suspects as more details surrounding his birth father’s death become apparent to Dylan.

The slow-burning mystery that unfolds instantly hooks readers as the story progresses. The narrative quickly turns from a man discovering his past to a town full of hidden secrets and a host of people willing to do whatever it takes to get their hands on a hidden fortune. Greed and charity are powerful themes at the heart of this story, and what people are capable of when those themes clash. The tension that builds and the hidden truths that Dylan uncovers will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

The Verdict

Heartfelt, thrilling, and entertaining, author Brady Koch’s “The Roadkill Lottery” is a must-read suspense thriller novel. The atmospheric mystery that unfolds and the wealth of dynamic characters at the heart of the narrative are underscored by a powerful, emotional narrative that speaks to what it means to be human and to the ways we connect with others in unexpected ways.
