This was a powerful and moving read. While not religious myself, it was heartwarming to see such a fresh take on faith and the ability to practice the openness and love that faith is meant to embody by embracing all those who believe, not just those of a particular orientation. The balance the author finds between their personal experiences and the religion they practice is felt in every chapter and keeps the reader engaged throughout.
The honesty and depth of passion with which the author writes were evident from the very first chapter. The fast-paced author’s journey and the use of passages and quotes from the Bible to meld the idea of acceptance and love into the greater theme were perfect. The heartfelt exploration of the author’s sexuality and the role her faith played in her journey was emotionally driven and compelling, and kept the reader invested and connected to the author on a personal level.
The Verdict
Powerfully written, engaging, and memorable, author and Pastor LaTrina Slater’s “God’s Grace for His Gay Children” is a must-read nonfiction book on faith and sexuality. The honest writing style and the way the author reflects on the struggles they and so many others have felt when confronted with hardcore religious extremism will have readers feeling both sympathy and hope, as the author’s personal revelations have inspired the book’s theme.
