Something that always stands out to me as I listen to music is just how much music transcends expectations. Whether that means transcending genres or tones our listeners aren’t expecting, or transcending the emotional connection we expect when listening to a particular band or song, music itself is transcendent. Not every song is meant to be an emotional powerhouse, ballad, or dance club remix. Some music can be bright, fun, and even nostalgic. Those are just some of the reactions I had to the band Hollywood Video Game Kill-Bot and their latest single, “Tough.”

A one-man band composed of Zachary Chacon, out of Lawndale, CA, the artist has created a unique, creative tone and sound that is wholly their own. While audiences could hear elements that harken back to artists such as Depeche Mode and Duran Duran, in reality, the track “Tough” feels like a unique and fun blend of 80s synth rock and electronica, with a video game tinge. 

Immediately upon listening to this track, I felt transported back to the days of playing Super Mario on the old Super Nintendo console, with an upbeat opening that drops into an almost action-driven electronic beat that keeps the audience’s heart pumping and stays with the listener long after the track ends. This is what makes the track feel both wildly new and nostalgic at the same time, and the rich texture of the sound the artist produces in this track, and compelling track length that immerses the audience into the atmosphere, the song produces both work to create a powerful new sound that electronica and video game enthusiasts alike will be drawn to.
