THE REVIEW
This was such a powerful and insightful true crime book. The author does an incredible job of presenting these stories and the realities of cults in general in the same conversational tone as the interviews from which these chapters are drawn, and gives the reader a sense of intimacy and insight that a good conversation about a shared interest can often bring. True crime is a popular genre to get lost in, and yet there is a unique quality to those that involve cults, for cults have been a worldwide phenomenon since the dawn of mankind and organized religion. The author captures that mystery and intrigue while also shedding an honest light on the horrors and devastation these stories are often associated with.
The multitude of different stories the author takes into account is astonishing. From more popular stories like the Jonestown Cult and Heaven’s Gate to modern-day shocks like the Cult of Trump and more, these stories and the facts surrounding them will draw readers in, and the author’s level of honesty and detail will keep them engaged throughout this book. One of the more shocking and modern stories is that of NXIVM, and the story the author of the book surrounding that case tells the author about their meeting with Keith, the head of that cult, and how something like a multi-marketing service can be the bedrock for finding others to join a collective cult like NXIVM is astonishing to read, and each chapter offers that level of personal insight from either survivors or those who have studied these cases extensively.
THE VERDICT
Memorable, honest, and engaging, author Alan. R. Warren’s “Cults” is a must-read nonfiction true crime book. The alarming yet insightful knowledge readers gain about the rise and fall of cults and cult behavior and the history of the tragic ends so many individuals met at the hands of these ruthless and power hungry leaders will resonate greatly with true crime fans and gives others a helping hand in identifying the traits and red flags that others now recognize to help end the rise of cults before it is too late.
