The Synopsis

What’s the worst way to spend a weekend with your quirky, magical team?

A team-building retreat, of course.

When Constantine drags the crew to Hochatown, OK, for some “bonding,” no one’s thrilled. Bob’s only focus is the bake-off, which is already shaping up to be a recipe for disaster. But when a group of thieves launches a high-stakes heist in the middle of their supposed downtime, things go south faster than you can say “sugar plums.”

Now, it’s not just about surviving each other’s company—it’s about surviving in a town where the dead have a nasty habit of showing up, and everyone has a secret. Between eccentric family reunions, a string of bodies dropping like flies, and a magical showdown that’s anything but ordinary, the team will have to navigate the chaos or risk becoming part of the mess themselves.

In this hilarious, fast-paced urban fantasy adventure, Sugar Plums and Death’s Intern proves that sometimes, the real danger comes from the family you never asked for—and the enemies you never saw coming.

Sugar Plums and Death’s Intern is book nine in The Enchanted Woods Cottagecore Series.

This book is set in the Reapers Universe. A stand-alone misadventure from the Intern Diaries. You don’t need the full files to survive this story. If you enjoy Supernatural and True Blood, the crew of Sugar Plums and Death’s Intern will keep you turning pages while wishing you were in your own cottage sipping tea.

The Review

This was a cozy supernatural mystery and romance novel. As a longtime fan of the series, it was nice and refreshing to see the author step into the widely regarded cottage-core genre, exploring Death’s interns and the group dynamic as they get away for a weekend together. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Death Intern series entry if there wasn’t some sort of action and criminal element to the narrative, giving fans of the series more depth and world-building without requiring them to have read the series to enjoy these characters and their journey in this book.

Yeah, what stood out the most was the emotional depth of the character development, as the book focuses less on the action and more on the romance and love, especially between the protagonist and a ghost he meets. Their unique interactions with one another and the way they form the bond they share become the emotional crux of the entire story, keeping readers invested as this period of time moves around them.

The Verdict

Fun, thrilling, and emotionally driven, Author D.C. Gomez’s “Sugar Plums & Death’s Intern” is a must-read cozy mystery and supernatural romance novel. The twists and turns of the story, the emotional development between the protagonist and others around them, and the depth of detail in the storytelling create an immersive world and compelling characters, leaving readers fully immersed and enthralled.
