The Synopsis

Whoever killed JonBenet Ramsey got away with murder.

Decades later, the mystery still circles the same two possibilities: a family member or an intruder so invisible that he left not even a shadow behind. In the landscape of American true crime, her murder stands as one of the most infamous cases of the 20th century-a criminal investigation that grew more tangled the longer it went.

When Boulder police zeroed in on the parents, John Ramsey countered by hiring one of the most formidable criminal defense firms in the country-Haddon, Morgan and Forman. From that moment, the investigation shifted. Evidence that should have anchored the case-like the three page ransom note many experts linked to Patsy Ramsey-was pushed to the margins.

The Ramsey’s legal team transformed the murder investigation into a full blown circus. Detectives stumbled like clowns, attorneys roared like lions, and John and Patsy hovered above the chaos like trapeze artists who never missed a beat. The press, wary of lawsuits, kept their reporting safe and sanitized, placing a quiet thumb on the scales of justice.

Now, after years of missteps, media fog, and legal maneuvering, the so-called Holy Grail of this true crime saga has been reduced to a single spec of unidentified DNA.

Find out why.

THE REVIEW

This was a thoughtful and compelling true crime book. The author brilliantly balances the facts of this famous case with the impact of the media, law enforcement, and the victim’s family on how the case progressed. The insight the author provides in the case allows readers to feel fully immersed, as if it were fresh and as involved as when it first occurred.

The heart of this true crime story is not only the tragic death of this young girl, but the influence those with wealth and power can have on both the Media and the way a case is perceived in spite of any direct physical evidence. The author’s writing ranges from passionate and thoughtful to informed and necessarily critical as they examine each step of the case, as a narrative shifts, and the truth remains just out of reach of law enforcement and true crime sleuths alike.

THE VERDICT

Gripping, engaging, and heartfelt in its delivery, Author Doc Miller’s “Prostitution of Justice” is a must-read true crime non-fiction book. Both the twists and turns that true crime enthusiasts know about this infamous case and the ones that they don’t will leave an impression on the reader as each chapter drives the audience further and further into the investigation and leaves some eager to find justice for this young girl that so many people have sought for so many years. About the Author

Thomas C “Doc” Miller was the only person charged with a crime in the JonBenet Ramsey case who refused a plea bargain, went to trial, and was found not guilty after the jury deliberated for only 20 minutes. Charged with a felony, Commercial Bribery, for his part in finding a copy of the ransom note and identifying Patsy Ramsey as the author, the decision was a stinging rebuke of a criminal justice system that ignored the heinous murder of JonBenét Ramsey. The Globe tabloid magazine initially hired Miller to assist in locating the three page ransom note. Miller had also worked as a private investigator and handwriting expert before entering law. With his inside knowledge of the JonBenét Ramsey murder investigation, the author now presents the public an explanation why no one was ever tried and found guilty of JonBenét’s murder, and why no one will ever face charges. Miller retired from a criminal defense practice in 2018 and now operates a bed-and-breakfast with his wife, Judith Phillips, in Denver, Colorado.
