The Synopsis

When the Chief of Security at Datamech is found murdered, Detective Rick Dietz is pulled into an investigation that quickly outgrows its corporate shell. The only thing missing from the scene is a prototype biochip using a fluid capable of storing data like a human brain— a breakthrough powerful enough to reshape intelligence, identity, and motive. As Dietz digs into the company’s secretive research team, he uncovers a tangle of ambition, rivalry, and buried fears surrounding a technology no one fully understands. Every answer raises new questions, and every witness seems to be hiding a different version of the truth.

As the pressure mounts, Dietz assumes the stolen chip was the motive behind the murder — but was it? Is he dealing with industrial espionage and foreign interests, or something far more primitive? With the line between innovation and danger blurring, Dietz must confront the human cost of a technology built to remember everything, and the devastating consequences of the secrets it was meant to protect.

THE REVIEW

This was a compelling sci-fi tech thriller-meets-detective-mystery read. The balance the author struck between sci-fi world-building and crime thriller meets espionage story development was a great foundation for this narrative. The story starts with a haunting note, with the promise of a revolutionary piece of technology taking a shocking turn when the technology the scientist created takes on a life of its own, and each chapter after that keeps hitting the reader with heavy atmosphere and a lingering question of technology’s role in everyday life that is hard to ignore.

The deep-seated themes of technology and humanity mesh well with the heart of this narrative, which was the character development. Much of the story played with the idea of memory, and what memory really is, and how it relates to what makes a person a person. The protagonist is both relatable and engaging, and often serves as the voice of the audience reading this book as each new development in the corporate and tech aspects of this crime unfolds. Yet it’s the exploration of memory that really stands out, with so many regarding it as the lifeblood or driving force of what makes us all human and what it means to truly live, giving this fictional tech real heartfelt consequences.

THE VERDICT

Thrilling, ingenious, and highly entertaining, JOE NIEHAUS’s “Swing of the Pendulum” is a must-read sci-fi tech thriller meets murder mystery and espionage novel. The author’s writing style is fully immersive, allowing the reader to feel transported to each gritty crime scene and the sterile labs from which this tech was born. The mounting tension, driven by the story’s shocking twists and turns, will keep readers on the edge of their seats as they delve into this mystery.
