Publisher Steamroots Heirloom shares a beautiful restoration of an iconic adult novel from the Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum in the book “The Fate of a Crown: Heirloom Edition.”
The Synopsis

BEFORE HE TOOK THE WORLD TO OZ, HE TOOK THEM TO THE BRINK OF REVOLUTION.
In 1905, L. Frank Baum—writing under the sophisticated pseudonym Schuyler Staunton—penned a hidden political masterpiece. Moving far beyond the whimsical borders of Oz, The Fate of a Crown is a pulse-pounding historical thriller of espionage, romance, and betrayal set against the lush, lethal backdrop of 19th-century Brazil.
Rio de Janeiro, 1889. The Brazilian Empire teeters on the ragged edge of a bloody military coup d’état. Enter Robert Harcliffe: a daring American adventurer who steps off the docks and straight into a deadly web of plots and counterplots.
As a revolutionary struggle ignites the dawn of freedom, Harcliffe is thrust into a treacherous shadow war between the secret corridors of power and the heights of the aristocracy. Hunted by elusive villains—none more formidable than the chilling Izabel, whose timeless beauty is a mask of old ivory—Harcliffe must overcome insurmountable odds to survive. In a country tearing itself apart, an outsider’s choices may ultimately decide the fate of a crown.

THE REVIEW
This was a rich and compelling new addition to a classic and rare adult novel by the iconic author. The level of political intrigue and suspense the narrative takes on, along with the careful attention to detail the author puts into the history and culture surrounding this period of political unrest in Brazil, was enthralling to engage with as a reader. The vivid imagery in the author’s writing style allows the reader to feel fully immersed in this revolution and the mounting tension as the protagonist struggles to find the truth about who could and could not be trusted.
While the narrative remains strong and the character development showcases the author’s range, this being the first adult narrative in his career, the powerful new illustrations in this addition to the novel provide a beautiful, almost retro style that elevates the story. The inclusion of aspects of the story, such as the real history behind this fictional tale surrounding the end of an empire and the beginning of a revolution during this era, as well as a reader’s guide for those just discovering this novel or even learning about it, allowed readers to feel more engaged with the strong political and thought-provoking themes the author brought to life on the page.
THE VERDICT
Memorable, engaging, and thrilling, author L. Frank Baum’s “The Fate of a Crown: Heirloom Edition” is a must-read adult-driven political and suspense thriller. The sense of adventure and action the story drives home, and the powerful character development that propels it, are elevated to new heights in this beautiful edition, which showcases a wellspring of new illustrations and real-world history readers can learn from and enjoy time and time again.
