The Synopsis

After years of control and in an act of desperation, Vivienne finally breaks free, fleeing across the country with her furious teenage daughter, Shayna, in search of safety at her father’s home. But escape is never simple, and when they are stranded in a desolate stretch of desert highway, help arrives in the form of Jonny, a quiet man haunted by his past.

As the miles stretch on, so do the tensions, between mother and daughter, between guilt and yearning, between the past and the fragile hope of something new. On the open road, love and healing begin to take shape in unlikely places. But before they can find peace, Vivienne must face what she’s truly running from—her husband or her own demons.

THE REVIEW

This is a thoughtful and compelling women’s fiction novel. The author does a wonderful job layering complex, emotional, heartfelt storytelling and character development with suspenseful, tension-filled scenes that keep readers on the edge of their seats. The imagery and the author’s writing style immerse the reader in both the strained and compelling mother-daughter relationship and the twisted, heartbreaking family dynamic that sparked the incident that begins the story.

The foundation of the narrative, of course, is the character development. While emerging characters like Johnny were fantastic and added more depth to the development of the protagonists, the mother-daughter dynamic at work here, the trauma that defined their backstory, and the way in which their relationship developed will keep readers emotionally invested as the story develops.

THE VERDICT

Heartfelt, engaging, and highly memorable, Author Rita Rowe’s “The Space Between Us” is a must-read family drama meets women’s contemporary fiction. The twists and turns in the main narrative help balance the raw, emotionally driven character development, and the powerful ending keeps readers invested and eager to read more of this fantastic author’s work.
